Rahu and Ketu: Your Karmic Destiny Axis Explained

Of all the planetary placements in a Vedic birth chart, Rahu and Ketu are perhaps the most mysterious — and the most revealing. They are shadow planets with no physical body, representing the mathematical points where the Moon's orbit intersects the Earth's orbital path around the Sun. In Jyotish, they are considered the primary indicators of karma across lifetimes.

The mythology — Why Rahu and Ketu exist

According to Vedic mythology, during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself as a god and drank the nectar of immortality (Amrit). The Sun and Moon recognised him and alerted Vishnu, who severed him with the Sudarshana Chakra. But having drunk the Amrit, Svarbhanu could not die — his head became Rahu and his tail became Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are said to take revenge by periodically swallowing the Sun and Moon — which is what we observe as solar and lunar eclipses.

Rahu — The North Node: Your soul's direction

Rahu represents what your soul is reaching toward in this lifetime. It governs ambition, desire, obsession, illusion, material pursuit, technology, foreign elements, and unconventional paths. Whatever house and sign Rahu occupies in your chart indicates the area of life where you feel an intense, sometimes compulsive pull — and where significant growth is possible.

Rahu amplifies everything it touches. In a favourable position (like the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th house, or in the signs of Gemini, Virgo, or Aquarius), Rahu can bring extraordinary worldly success — sudden fame, technological prowess, social influence, or wealth. In challenging positions, it creates maya (illusion), deception, and insatiable craving.

Ketu — The South Node: Your soul's past

Ketu represents what your soul has already mastered in past lives — the qualities and experiences that come naturally to you, perhaps too naturally. The house and sign of Ketu indicates where you have deep, instinctive competence, but also where you feel a sense of completion or even disinterest. Ketu is associated with spirituality, detachment, liberation (moksha), occult knowledge, and psychic sensitivity.

People with prominent Ketu placements (especially in the 1st, 4th, or 12th house, or in Scorpio) often feel a deep spiritual pull from a young age, experience unusual psychic or intuitive abilities, or feel oddly detached from worldly achievements even when they attain them. Because Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other, they form an axis across two houses of your chart. Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari system. These are often among the most pivotal periods in a person's life. The Rahu Dasha tends to be intensely worldly — major career moves, relationships, travel, ambition, and sometimes confusion or upheaval. The Ketu Dasha tends toward internalisation, spirituality, health matters, and releasing what no longer serves.
